A man who fled from Kennewick police on a bicycle Thursday night was hospitalized with two broken ribs and a punctured lung after he crashed.
Officers were called to the 1000 block of First Avenue after someone reported that their father’s cellphone had been stolen and they were preparing to meet with the people who had taken it, police said. The victim reportedly had a handgun and planned to hold the thieves at gunpoint until police arrived.
But as police were about to arrive, they were told two suspects in the theft had fled on bikes. An officer found one suspect near First Avenue and Beech Street, but the man, who hasn’t been identified, continued to flee, jumping curbs and cutting through alleys in the neighborhood.
When that suspect reached the former Bank of the West building at First Avenue and Washington Street, he struck a curb and crashed. Though injured, he resisted arrest. It wasn’t until after he was taken to Trios Southridge Hospital in Kennewick that the extent of his injuries was discovered.

The suspect’s condition was not immediately available, but he was been admitted to the hospital.
