Embers from a burning piece of paper grew into a 20-acre fire south of Kennewick off Interstate 82 on Thursday afternoon.
Firefighters from Benton Fire District 1 and Richland responded at 3:25 p.m. to reports of a small fire off Bofer Canyon Road near Beck Road.
The fire started when a resident was burning a piece of paper outside when the sparks blew into dry grass near his home, said Capt. Devin Helland of Fire District 1.
“The embers took off from the paper and caught his hillside on fire,” Helland said.

Flames had scorched 20 acres by the time crews got it out about 4:20 p.m.
Five fire engines and a bulldozer battled the blaze, said Helland, who warned residents to be cautious of the dry conditions.
“It does not take much to start a fire and for it to spread quickly,” he said.
