A fire caused significant damage to a home Sunday afternoon in the 1900 block of 21st Place in Kennewick, but no one was injured.
The fire, reported at 4:20 p.m., started in the kitchen and was noticed by residents who were on the patio, said Battalion Chief Mikal Barnett with the Kennewick Fire Department. Investigators suspect that a malfunctioning kitchen appliance may have caused the fire.
The kitchen suffered fire damage, Barnett said, while smoke damaged the rest of the house.
Benton County Fire District 1 helped with putting out the fire. Barnett said it took 18 firefighters about 10 minutes to extinguish it.

People will eventually be able to live in the house again, he said.
“It’s going to require some cleaning it and repairing and refurbishing it before they can go back and occupy it,” Barnett said.
