A Umatilla teacher died in a wreck late Saturday near Hermiston, said the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office.
Elisabet Flores, 39, was driving with her husband, Sergio Murguia, and 13-year-old son on Westland Road south of Hermiston at 10 p.m. when she drove off the road and crashed into a chain link fence near a rural fire station.
Sheriff Terry Rowan said Flores was injured by the top rail of the fence. Her husband and son were not hurt. He said the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Flores, a bilingual teacher, taught first grade at McNary Heights Elementary School and had been with the district 10 years. She also had three children in the Umatilla school system.
“Her loss is felt by staff, students and the community,” said Superintendent Heidi Sipe.
The Umatilla School District provided crisis response teams in its schools Monday to help students and staff during the grieving process.
