A sexual assault investigation involving a longtime Pasco police officer has been turned over to Franklin County prosecutors to review for possible charges, law enforcement officials confirmed Thursday.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office looked into the case involving Officer Richard Aguirre, officials said. The department did not release details of the investigation, believed to be months long.
The department placed Aguirre on paid leave in November following an off-duty incident, and he has not returned to work, said police Capt. Ken Roske. The captain would not discuss the alleged incident other than to say it could result in criminal charges.
Prosecutor Shawn Sant could not be reached Thursday about the case.

Aguirre has served in the department since 1988 and was Police Officer of the Year in 2002, according to Herald archives. He’s served as a gang officer and in the detective division.
