Records show the victim of a fatal shooting at a Minnesota rest stop may be from Kennewick.
A Ramsey County medical examiner identified Matthew Paul Maffei, 23, as the victim in Wednesday’s shooting, the Star Tribune newspaper in Minneapolis reported. Maffei has addresses listed in Ephrata and Kennewick.
A Facebook page that appears to be Maffei’s says he is from Kennewick.
Johnathon Dean Mar, 18, is suspected of shooting Maffei at a Maple Grove rest stop then leading police on a chase which ended when Mar was shot dead. Mar was from Kennewick and most recently attended Legacy High School and Tri-Tech Skills Center in Kennewick.
Police say Mar brandished a weapon after crashing a sports utility vehicle. A sheriff’s deputy and police officer both fired during the incident.
It’s unclear how the men knew each other or why they were in Minnesota together.
The Star Tribune reports the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the case.
