A Benton County jail inmate is accused of breaking the nose of a corrections officer and causing other minor injuries during an attack Saturday.
Dylan Ray Amos, 19, now is being held on suspicion of second-degree assault.
Jail records show Amos has been in the Kennewick facility since Nov. 7 for a gross misdemeanor theft charge, as well as for misdemeanor resisting arrest and criminal trespassing.
Corrections Officer Robert Mancillas was in one of the male housing units, sitting at a work station, when he was hit without warning.
Never miss a local story.
Mancillas — a 16-year veteran of the county’s corrections division — fell to the ground as Amos continued to hit him several times in the face and head, said Detective Sgt. Kevin McCary, with the Benton County Sheriff’s Office.
Amos eventually was restrained by other jail staff. McCary said in a news release that it’s not known why Amos attacked the officer.
