A career criminal is going to prison for two years and five months after admitting he took floor-covering equipment from a truck.
Chad Jeremy Quigley, 41, pleaded guilty to second-degree theft, a felony, and second-degree vehicle prowling, a gross misdemeanor.
An employee of Doug-N-Lew's Floor Coverings told Pasco police he was inside his Sylvester Street home on Feb. 10, 2012, when he heard the roll-down door being opened on his full-size work truck. The man said he thought the truck was locked.
He went outside to find a man removing items from his truck. The suspect jumped into a Jeep Cherokee and sped away, court documents said.
Never miss a local story.
A neighbor also reported seeing a Jeep Cherokee parked in the driveway next to the work truck. She told officers she saw a man walking between the Jeep and the truck and assumed he worked for the company, documents said.
An owner of the Tri-City business confirmed for police that the victim is one of his employees and parks the truck at his house.
The stolen goods were valued at more than $750. Quigley got away with a wet saw, extension cords, carpet-stretching equipment, drills, an air hose, an air nailer and two angle grinders.
Pasco police were still investigating the theft a month later when they learned that Richland officers had arrested a man on suspicion of stealing construction tools from vehicles.
Since the circumstances were similar, Pasco police showed photo lineups to the victim and the neighbor and both picked out Quigley as the suspect.
Quigley also faces charges in Benton County Superior Court for second-degree vehicle prowling, second-degree theft, first-degree trafficking stolen property and tampering with a witness.
His trial on the 2012 case is set for Oct. 27, but he is expected to enter a guilty plea Oct. 16.
Quigley had 17 felony convictions on his record before these crimes. The cases, dating to 1992, involve burglary, forgery, taking a vehicle without permission, theft, residential burglary and possession of stolen property.
