A 26-year-old woman was in critical condition Saturday night after a teen driver hit two pedestrians in a west Kennewick roundabout near the Columbia Center mall.
Kennewick police said the driver — only identified as a 16-year-old girl — was traveling east in the westbound lanes on Gage Boulevard when her smaller sedan struck the two walkers.
Police and paramedics were called to the roundabout at Gage and North Center Parkway at 4:54 p.m. Saturday.
Officers found Raquel R. Middleton on the ground in the eastbound lane and unconscious. A physician who happened to be in the area at the time assisted officers with CPR until firefighters got to the scene, a news release said.
Ty Cornwell, 30, was walking with Middleton when they both were hit. He reportedly suffered a deep cut to one of his arms.
The driver was conscious when police arrived. She suffered unknown injuries, though they were believed not to be life-threatening.
All three were taken to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland, the news release said.
The roundabout was closed for several hours with detours on nearby streets while the Kennewick Police Department Traffic Division took photographs and measurements of the crash site for their investigation.
Police did not say if anyone else was in the car with the teen driver.
Authorities told the Herald that the car hit the pedestrians west of the roundabout, then continued into the traffic circle and crashed into a basalt column in the center. The airbags then deployed on the car.
