The unidentified man was able to get away when officers decided to stop the chase because it got too dangerous, said Sgt. Ken Lattin, police spokesman. The chase was called off near 7th Avenue and Highway 395.
Police were called around 11:55 p.m. Monday night to a report of a burglary at a home on the 3100 block of West Fourth Avenue, Lattin said. When officers arrived, the suspect got into a pickup truck parked in the driveway and fled.
Officers chased the man as he drove around 35 mph in no traffic, Lattin said. The suspect then sped up and began driving in a reckless manner.
Police believe the man broke out a window at the house and stole tools and a laptop, Lattin said. The house was under renovation.
Some of the tools fell out of the pickup and officers were able to collect them.
Anyone with information on the break-in is asked to call Kennewick police at 509-628-0333.
