There has been a series of fires along Highway 240 in Kennewick this summer, according to fire officials.
The Kennewick Fire Department reports at least 14 fires since late July along the highway between the Edison off-ramp and the Highway 395 roundabout.
The first fire was reported on July 25 in a median on Highway 240, said Joe Terpenning, deputy fire marshal. A fire Monday burned some brush about 200 yards from the Edison exit.
Fire investigators have not been able to determine what has started the fires, which have only been reported during the weekdays.
“It looks more consistent with someone throwing something out to start a fire or there is something happening with a passing vehicle,” he said.
Officials are asking anyone who spots a fire along the highway to stay in their vehicles and call 911. Anyone with information about the fires can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
