An intoxicated man who had a pipe bomb in his car and told officers he planned to blow himself up was arrested Saturday afternoon in Richland, according to police.
Police found Brandon Jedd Starkey, 29, passed out in the driver's seat of a Honda Accord in the Safeway parking lot off of George Washington Way, said Sgt. Darryl Judge. Starkey appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Officers spotted the pipe bomb and were able to get Starkey out the car and into handcuffs, Judge said. Starkey told officers he planned to blow himself up if police tried to contact him.
Officers blocked off the parking lot and called in the Richland Bomb Squad, Judge said. Bomb squad members were able to disable the bomb, which was made out of PVC pipe, in the parking lot.
Police took Starkey to a local hospital following the incident, Judge said. He will be booked into the Benton County jail on suspicion of possessing an explosive device once he is released.
Police found no evidence that connects Starkey to a pipe bomb that was found in a trash can at Columbia Park earlier this month.
A Parks Department employee found the explosive and the bomb squad disabled it.
