Human remains were found Tuesday afternoon along the Columbia River upstream from the Wanapum Dam.
A citizen walking along the river in Crescent Bar found the human bones, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s office.
Due to lower water levels of the river to relieve pressure on the dam, which has a crack in the spillway, many areas that are usually underwater are exposed.
The bones were found in an area that is normally underwater.
Sheriff’s detectives called leaders of the nearby Wanapum Tribe to the site in case the remains were from an early settler or Native American.
The Washington State Patrol Crime Lab will collect the bones Wednesday for analysis.
