A 37-year-old Kennewick man was charged Thursday with breaking another man's femur when he allegedly shot him in a property dispute.
Tommy Edward Avis is scheduled to appear today in Benton County Superior Court.
He's charged with first-degree assault with a firearm, possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine and two counts of second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm.
Avis has been in jail without bail since he turned himself in to police Sunday. He had a brief hearing Monday in Benton County District Court.
Never miss a local story.
Kennewick police were called to West Albany Court the morning of Dec. 28 for a report that a person had been shot.
Officers found Derrick Cady in the street with a gunshot wound to his leg, but Avis and other people already had fled the scene, according to police and court documents.
The bullet fractured the bone in Cady's thigh, documents said. He was taken to Trios Health in Kennewick before being flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for further treatment.
Avis and Cady, 35, of Kennewick, reportedly know each other.
When investigators tracked down Avis, the suspect admitted shooting Cady with a .25-caliber automatic pistol while the two were arguing over property, court documents said. Two .25-caliber shell casings were found at the crime scene.
"Avis stated he was not sure he wouldn't do it again if he had the chance," Deputy Prosecutor Megan Whitmire wrote of Avis' interview with detectives.
A search of Avis' home turned up a .410-caliber shotgun, along with a significant quantity of meth, packaging materials and scales in a locked container, documents said.
Avis is not supposed to own or be in control of firearms because he has felony convictions out of California for possession of a controlled substance and arson.
Prosecutors also noted that Avis' criminal history includes two counts of receiving stolen property, taking a vehicle without the consent of the owner, threatening crime with intent to terrorize and force with a deadly weapon. They're waiting for confirmation on whether those crimes resulted in convictions.
Authorities are looking for Michael Eugene Land, 24, a suspected accomplice in the shooting. Genesis Marie Garza, 28, also is wanted for questioning, along with warrants unrelated to the shooting.
