An 80-year-old Kennewick man was scammed out of $125,000 by men who claimed to be IRS agents.
But a concerned bank employee kept the same victim from being scammed again when he tried to send $35,000 for a fake sweepstakes prize.
Kennewick police said some unknown men called the victim recently and told him he was being investigated for owing back taxes. The man sent a check for $125,000 to the suspects.
When the victim then tried to send another check to claim a sweepstakes prize, a bank employee called police and didn't let the check go through.
Investigators believe the scam has been going on nationally.
