A Pasco man arrested following a car chase in a stolen vehicle told police he had just gotten out of jail and took the car so he wouldn't have to walk, authorities said.
Kennewick police were called to the Toyota Center at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night on a report of a stolen car, a release said. A Kennewick man said he couldn’t find his car after playing hockey at the center. The keys were left in the vehicle.
Daniel C. Penselin, 30, was found driving the vehicle at Fifth Avenue and Olympia Street about an hour and a half later. Officers attempted to pull Penselin over but he fled in the car.
Police chased the stolen vehicle through east Kennewick until it slid on some wood chips bordering a yard near 15th Avenue and Cedar Street. Penselin abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot but police soon found him hiding under a trailer in a backyard.
Penselin allegedly had methamphetamine and told authorities he’d just been released from the Benton County Jail. He walked across the street to the Toyota Center and took the vehicle.
Penselin was booked into the jail under suspicion of auto theft, felony eluding and possession of a controlled substance.
