A white, powdery substance in an envelope received about 10:30 a.m. Friday morning at the Two Rivers Correctional Institution mail room is not hazardous, according to emergency response officials.
However, Oregon State Police is investigating whether the envelope and its contents is associated with any crime, according to the Oregon Department of Corrections.The prison mail room area was secured and the Oregon Office of State Fire Marshal's Hazardous Materials Unit and the Umatilla Fire Department responded to evaluate the powder.
No employees reported any adverse reactions.
The mail room is inside the administration building, where 18 to 20 staff members normally work each day.
Four staff members were in the mail room at the time the substance was found.
Two Rivers Correctional Institution is a medium and minimum security facility in Umatilla that houses about 1,800 men in custody.
