It didn't take long for Kennewick police and Tri-Cities Crime Stoppers to identify a shoplifter who was recorded looking at a security system he later stole.
An image released by Crime Stoppers around 10 a.m. Friday showed the suspect as he viewed the video system at Costco in Kennewick.
Within 45 minutes, Crime Stoppers received its first tip, said Mike Blatman, Kennewick police spokesman.
He got two more calls before 11 a.m. and some tips through the website. In all, about 15 tipsters identified the suspect as Jesse Salisbury, 25, of Irrigon.
Never miss a local story.
Blatman said he called Morrow County sheriff's officials, who apparently started getting their own calls about Salisbury by 1 p.m.
Sheriff's officials knew Salisbury well and arrested him and two suspected accomplices on suspicion of first-degree theft, Blatman said.
Salisbury is accused of going to Costco between 7:30 and 7:45 p.m. Thursday and looking at the display of the $3,500 security video system. He then added a boxed security system to the flat screen TV in his cart and walked to the back of the store as if he was continuing to shop, Blatman said.
At the back of the warehouse, he pushed the cart through an emergency exit and loaded the items into a waiting vehicle.
When Morrow County sheriff's deputies arrested Salisbury and the other suspects, they recovered the TV and security system, Blatman said. Salisbury also is linked to a theft at Sears earlier Thursday where some tools were stolen, he said.
