A 12-year-old passenger was injured Aug. 19 when a tire failure caused a vehicle to go off the road and land on its side.
The Washington State Patrol said Jessica Bernal of Wapato was injured when the left rear tire of a vehicle driven by Maria T. Torres, 34, of Wapato deflated.
The 2004 Mercury Mountaineer went off the road of eastbound Interstate 82 at milepost 62, about three miles west of Sunnyside.
Torres was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured. The state patrol said defective equipment caused the wreck, but charged Torres with driving with her wheels off the roadway.
Bernal, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was taken to Sunnyside Community Hospital. The hospital could not release her condition because she is a minor.
The Mountaineer was totaled and towed from the scene.
