Borgans Island on the Columbia River will reopen to limited recreation Friday after being closed since September because of visitor misuse.
The island between Pasco and Kennewick, which also is called Goat or Chiawana Island, had makeshift latrines dug in the dirt, concentrated disposal of human waste, toilet paper, diapers, glass and other trash last year, the Army Corps said. Corps employees cleaned up the trash.
As the island reopens, camping and fires are prohibited and visitors must pack out all trash. A pack-it-in, pack-it-out bag dispenser will be installed. Visitors should use restroom facilities at nearby Chiawana or Columbia Parks. Wade Park is also just downstream at Pasco’s Road 54.
The Corps and Franklin County Sheriff’s Department will continue to monitor the island.
