The Tri-City Herald took home three awards Saturday in the 2014 Society of Professional Journalists Northwest Excellence in Journalism Contest for mid-size newspapers.
Reporter Sara Schilling received third place in personalities reporting for “ Still standing tall,” about Mushtaq Jihad, an Iraqi refugee in Richland who lost his right leg in a blast set by a militia group. Jihad, who also was diagnosed with leukemia, was able to get a new prosthetic leg thanks to an outpouring of community support.
Reporters Kristi Pihl and Tyler Richardson won third place in spot news reporting for coverage of the March 31, 2014, explosion at the Northwest Pipeline natural gas facility near Plymouth that caused the evacuation of about 1,000 workers and residents.
And religion page columnist Lucy Luginbill took third place in the general column category for her “ Light Notes” columns.
The contest included journalists from Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana.
