No one was hurt early Saturday when a BNSF Railway train struck a vehicle that was abandoned on tracks in the area of West Canal Drive and North Yost Street in Kennewick.
A 36-year-old Kennewick man later was arrested on suspicion of second-degree trespassing and hit-and-run in connection with the incident.
Kennewick officers were called to the tracks at 5:10 a.m.
Richard W Singrey allegedly had driven across the field behind Canal Drive and was unable to get his vehicle completely over the tracks, a police news release said.
He fled when officers showed up, it said.
“Officers arrived just as a BNSF train, headed eastbound, collided with the vehicle. The train was traveling at low speeds and no one was injured. Officers and crews worked to clear the collision scene as quickly as possible due to the train blocking multiple intersections to the west,” including Edison and Kellogg streets, the release said.
Singrey returned to the scene at about 6:30 a.m. and was identified by a witness and arrested without incident, police said.
