Kennewick School District buses will be allowed to use Keewaydin Drive between Auburn and Dayton streets to access Kennewick High School until the Dayton Street bridge is completed.
Superintendent Dave Bond told the school board Wednesday that the city would make the road, which is generally not a through street, accessible by removing posts that block it to motorized traffic.
The district, city of Kennewick and transit officials have been working to address transportation issues on Dayton since the contractor revealed that work to replace the bridge spanning an irrigation canal won't be finished before classes start Aug. 26. The bridge now is expected to reopen the week of Sept. 8.
Never miss a local story.
w Between 60 and 70 students have signed up for the new Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Kennewick High for the fall term, district officials said.
The district had long sought a JROTC program, which teaches students citizenship and leadership skills and emphasizes academics.
Kennewick High is the only Tri-City high school with such a program.
w Kamiakin High School senior Alec Sun was sworn into office as the school board's new student representative.
The position is non-voting but board members have questioned past student representatives when considering policies and issues directly affecting students.
