A registered sex offender accused of passing a sexually explicit note to a girl and inappropriately touching a teen at a Kennewick mobile home park has been charged with molestation.
Vernon Dee Gillett, 70, allegedly gave a note to the 13-year-old asking her for sex in exchange for money and gifts, court documents said. The Kennewick man has been charged with second-degree child molestation.
Gillett was arrested Wednesday at the mobile home park following an investigation by police.
He gave the girl the note while on a fishing trip in Adams County, prosecutors said. The girl told her parents on the way home and they contacted police.
Gillett admitted to giving the girl the note, telling authorities he is attracted to young girls, court documents said.
The girl told police that Gillett also has touched other children in the mobile home park, kissed her little sister on the lips and has kids "fish for candy in his pockets," court documents said. Another 13-year-old girl told police Gillett touched her inappropriately and told her he loved her.
Prosecutors said Gillett and his adult son routinely organize events for kids at the mobile home park.
Gillett was convicted of communicating with a minor for immoral purposes in 2013 and is not allowed around juveniles, court documents said. He was convicted of handing a girl in Walla Walla a note asking for sex.
Gillett also admitted to raping a 5-year-old in Yakima in 2010, court documents said. Benton County prosecutors have contacted the Yakima Police Department to investigate.
