The Boise Fiber Farm at Wallula and ConAgra Foods in Connell were fined by the Washington State Department of Ecology, the state announced in its roundup of environmental penalties for the second quarter of 2014.
It accused the fiber farm of burning stumps and agricultural waste that was not dry, which caused smoke on non-burn days. Neighbors complained, according to the state.
The Boise Fiber Farm paid the $9,000 fine, which was issued June 8.
ConAgra Foods was accused of burning prohibited materials in an outdoor fire, including demolition debris. A fine of $4,000 was issued by the state on June 17 and paid by ConAgra.
The Department of Ecology issued $427,214 in penalties of $1,000 or more from April through June. Money collected goes to the state’s general fund or to dedicated pollution prevention accounts.
