STARBUCK -- The swimming area and beach at Lyons Ferry Park was closed Friday after routine testing showed elevated levels of E. coli bacteria.
No swimming will be allowed until harmful bacteria levels drop to a range considered safe for people.
Fishing and boating continues to be allowed in nearby areas. But fish caught near the swim beach should be thoroughly cleaned and fully cooked before eating, according to the Army Corps of Engineers.
The contamination likely is the result of waterfowl droppings, combined with hot summer temperatures and the slow water flow through the swimming area, according to the Corps.

More water samples will be collected for testing Monday.
