A multi-faith prayer vigil is planned at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sacajawea State Park in Pasco to restore the Columbia River to health and return salmon.
A series of prayer vigils is planned along the Columbia River in advance of the renegotiation of the Columbia River Treaty between Canada and the United States. Songs, story-telling and drumming are planned.
Organizers of the event, who describe themselves and indigenous and non-indigenous people of many faiths who care about the river's future, support broadening the treaty to include ecological goals. Now the treaty focuses on water storage and power production.
They also want to return salmon to spawning waters in Canada and the United States that now have dams.
