WALLA WALLA -- The Friends of Pioneer Park Aviary raised close to $85,000 to help rebuild the aviary in Pioneer Park in Walla Walla.
After city council members voted to impose a six-month moratorium on the decommissioning of the aviary that will end in August, Friends had time raise the money to rebuild the facility and take over full operation by 2015.
The cost for rebuilding is nearly $400,000. The city possesses half the proceeds.
Another $100,000 is still needed.

More than 170 species of birds are kept at the aviary.
