An 8-year-old Benton City girl was found eight hours after getting lost in a camping area east of Chinook Pass on Thursday night, the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office reported.
The girl was not injured and was calm when rescuers found her, said sheriff’s Sgt. George Town.
“(The searcher) pulls up in the jeep and she starts quizzing him. ‘Who are you?’ ‘Do you know my parents?’,” Town said.
The girl’s family was setting up camp earlier in the afternoon, at the Little Naches Campground, which is roughly midway between Chinook Pass and the intersection of Highway 12 and Highway 410, when she and her sister went to gather firewood, a statement from the sheriff’s office said. The girls became separated, and the family unsuccessfully searched for her at 3 p.m.
