A group of Richland High School students recently took first place at a global finals competition in teamwork and problem-solving.
Students Brendan Birchenough, Jackson Chin, Ben Graves, Maddie Graves, Ryan Walker and Carmichael Middle School student Mickinley Chin won their category at the finals in Knoxville, Tenn., a news release said. The students also won a Renaissance Award for outstanding design, engineering, execution and performance.
Destination Imagination advocates creative and critical thinking within a team. Student teams spend two to four months working on a solution for a challenge they are given and the results can be theatrical, structural, scientific or improvised. Hundreds of teams and thousands of students attended the global finals to compete in one of six categories.
Event organizers and others attending the event were impressed by Richland's presentation, called "Oh, I Get It Now!", and it was highlighted during the finals' closing ceremonies, said team managers Lori and George Chin.
Never miss a local story.
"The kids kept clear, focused minds and quickly resolved a number of issues that arose during the week," the Chins said. "They did an amazing job."
