A mental health evaluation was ordered for an 18-year-old girl who allegedly tried to spit on a nurse after she was taken to the hospital for "unusual behavior" in public.
Stormie Lea Coleman will be evaluated in the Benton County jail, instead of being sent to Eastern State Hospital in Medical Lake. A review hearing is set for July 2.
Police got a call May 13 from a concerned citizen who reported Coleman was "acting strange," court documents said. The Kennewick woman reportedly was seen "leaning into traffic and waving her arms into the air," documents said.
Officers discovered Coleman had an outstanding warrant and arrested her, but first took her to Trios Health in Kennewick to be checked.
Coleman allegedly became belligerent at the hospital and had to be restrained. At one point she complained the restraint on her hands was too tight, then Coleman tried to spit at the nurse as she approached Coleman to loosen them, court documents said.
Coleman is charged with third-degree assault.
Coleman's criminal case is on hold until the evaluation is done and a judge decides she is competent to continue.
