Kennewick's Parks & Recreation Department is taking a creative approach to get residents to check out their city's recreational offerings.
A colorful mailer recently was sent to many city residents, offering a chance to win prizes including free Carousel of Dreams rides for a year and Seattle Mariners tickets.
Take the mailer to the parks and recreation department's registration office at the Southridge Sports & Events Complex and enter to win one of four prizes.
The two Mariners tickets and two Seattle Sounders tickets include a bus ride to and from the game, said Brandon Lange, the department's sponsorship and sports marketing coordinator. Those were donated by Chad Davis, an American Family Insurance agent in Kennewick.
Columbia Park Golf Links also donated a yearly pass, and Gesa Credit Union donated the Carousel of Dreams rides.
Lange said the mailer was an effort to educate Kennewick residents about what is available. The city spent about $4,200 on the promotion since much of the effort was paid for with sponsorships.
The mailer advertises park facility rentals, activities for adults, preschoolers and youths, trips and tours, fitness and health classes, sports and day camps, visual arts activities and swimming.
Many also residents aren't aware the department has volunteer opportunities and offers financial aid, he said.
And quite a few residents haven't checked out the Southridge complex, Lange said. People can rent a basketball court at the pavilion, for example, or just drop by to shoot some hoops, he said.
The department also is encouraging people to check out its website, at www.go2kennewick.com/recreation, since the department is no longer mailing paper copies of its catalog, Lange said.
Lange said the mailers already have brought in some residents. He hopes to see a few more since the contest continues until 5 p.m. Friday, May 30.
So far, there are 32 entries for the golf pass and the carousel rides, and 25 entries for the sports tickets, he said. Only one person per household can enter in the drawing, and a household can win one of the four prizes.
The city sent direct mailers to homes in the 99337 and 99336 zip codes. Mailers also were available at some apartment complexes and at schools in the 99338 zip code.
Some extra mailers are still available at the parks and recreation department's registration center at 2901 Southridge Blvd. for residents who didn't receive one and want to enter the contest, Lange said.
Office hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. The office can be reached at 509-585-4293.
