The Saturday death of a 35-year-old Mesa woman who was hit by a train appears to have been accidental, according to officials.
Preliminary autopsy results show that Tonya Wright suffered from blunt force trauma to her head and torso, said Dan Blasdel, Franklin County coroner.
“She was definitely alive when the train hit her,” he said.
Wright was hit by an eastbound BNSF Railway Co. train on the company’s main rail line three miles east of Mesa at 5:30 a.m. Saturday.
She was apparently lying on railroad tracks near what officials believe is her home, officials said. She was about 50 feet from a private crossing.
Officials still want to review video from trains that passed over those tracks between midnight and 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Blasdel said. They also expect toxicology results in the next six to eight weeks.
Blasdel said there has been a lot of speculation about Wright’s death. But he said they did not find bullet holes or any signs that her death was anything other than an accident.
The incident remains under investigation.
