The Washington Department of Ecology plans to spend about $202 million in grants and loans on 70 projects across the state that would help protect water health.
Tri-City area projects that could benefit include:
-- A 915,000 loan to West Richland to upgrade the biosolids management system at the city's wastewater treatment plant by mechanically dewatering solids daily and eliminating the sludge storage lagoon.
-- A $250,000 grant to Benton Conservation District for public events where Benton County residents can access well water screening and health information on nitrates in groundwater. Samples that exceed Safe Drinking Water standards will be referred for more monitoring.
