Dan Newhouse, the former director of the state Department of Agriculture, announced Friday that he is strongly considering running for Doc Hastings’ congressional seat.
Hastings announced his retirement Thursday, saying he will not run for re-election this fall.
Newhouse said Friday that he’s very interested in Hastings' position.
Newhouse, co-owner of Irving Newhouse & Sons near Sunnyside, is a hops farmer. He was appointed by former Gov. Chris Gregoire to the head of the Department of Agriculture in 2009.
Newhouse, a Republican, was elected to the state House of Representatives to represent the 15th Legislative District in 2002. He served six years before he left the Legislature for the Department of Agriculture.
He has a bachelor’s degree in agriculture economics, agriculture and forestry leadership from Washington State University.
He has been a county board member and county president for the Washington State Farm Bureau, and board member for the Hop Growers of Washington and Hop Growers of America.
