Tim Froemke will be angry if he doesn’t get to see his favorite team play in Super Bowl XLVIII. And you won’t like him when he’s angry.
After all, he is the Seahulk.
Froemke, 54, of Ritzville, has portrayed the muscled green superhero at Seattle Seahawks games for most of the past decade. He paints his body to look like a gridiron version of the Incredible Hulk, who transforms from mild-mannered scientist to raging monster when upset.
Stacey Moore and her daughter, Emma, 7, were excited to meet Seahulk on Friday at the Family Expo at TRAC in Pasco. They’ve noticed him at games for years, they said.
“It’s really cool that he’s here,” Moore said.
Seahulk had the biggest muscles Emma had ever seen, she said — except for her dad’s, of course.
Froemke began painting his face green for the National Football Conference championship game after the 2005 season, when he was inspired by a friend who is a Green Bay Packers “Cheesehead” fan, he said. He followed the Seahawks to the Super Bowl that year, where they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Then, he decided to take it a step further.
“I said, ‘what would this look like on my chest?’” he said.
A longtime bodybuilder, Froemke has since gone shirtless and green to most Seahawks home games at CenturyLink Field. But he was always disappointed that the paint his wife, Eva, applied did not show off the definition in his muscles. Then, before this season, he found a Seattle-area body painting studio that brought his dreams of the physique of the Marvel Comics character to life.
That’s when more people started noticing him.
“The airbrush painting brings out the definition,” he said. “I’ve been getting on TV — ESPN, Fox Sports.”
It has brought a new level of fame for the former Mr. Washington, Mr. Oregon and Mr. Northwest.
“I took third in the nation twice at bodybuilding and nobody knew who I was,” he said. “I paint myself green at a Seahawks game and I’m famous.” The Froemkes are Seahawks season ticket holders, but their seats are well above the field in the 200 level. So they often trade in their two seats for one in the end zone, closer to the television cameras. That leaves Eva Froemke, with her green-and-blue streaked wig, to have to find someplace else to watch.
“We’re on the waiting list to get season tickets down lower,” Eva Froemke said.
The Froemkes were not selected for Super Bowl tickets in a lottery of season ticket holders, but Tim is doing everything he can to get to New Jersey so he can see the team play the Denver Broncos on Feb. 2.
They hope to raise $7,000, which would cover a $4,000 end zone ticket and travel expenses.
They were charging attendees $5 a picture Friday at the Family Expo and are scheduled to be back from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today. They are also selling signed pictures on eBay for $5 each and looking for sponsorships. They can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The airbrushing may bring Seahulk more attention, but it also costs between $250 and $400 a game for the procedure. Tim Froemke, an out-of-work electrician, estimates that he has already spent between $15,000 and $20,000 this season going to the games in Seattle, 220 miles from Ritzville.
But he plans to make it to the Super Bowl in his green paint, blue jeans and Seahawks hard hat whether or not he raises the money. “I’ll figure it out,” he said. “I’m going to go. I’ve got credit cards, but I don’t want to bury myself. I hope I will make enough money to ease the pain.”
And he isn’t too worried about the temperatures outdoors at MetLife Stadium, currently predicted at about 25 degrees — as long as he gets plenty of time on television, he said.
“When the camera’s on me, I’m not cold,” he said. “But as soon as the camera leaves I get cold.”
