Some people are receiving spam emails asking them to appear in court in Pasco and other locations, officials said Tuesday.
Two people with no history with Pasco Municipal Court have contacted the court to ask about emails allegedly forwarding them to its offices, but they were actually referred as part of a nationwide email scam, court administrator Dot French said.
The fraudulent email is being widely distributed across the country with the subject line “Urgent court notice NR #73230” (or another random number), according to a Washington State Courts news release. The email asks them to appear in the “court of Washington” on Jan. 17. The email is “malware” and will download a virus to a computer if an attached “court notice” is open.
People who receive the email are asked to delete it immediately without opening it.
French did not know if other area courts had been referred to in the emails.
