A stage 1 burn ban is forecast for Walla Walla County beginning at 4 p.m. today.
Light winds and poor dispersion are expected starting Christmas Day, leading to poor air quality later this week, said Ranil Dhammapala, an atmospheric scientist with the state Department of Ecology air quality program, in a statement.
Stage 1 bans apply to the use of uncertified wood-burning devices including wood stoves, inserts and fireplaces unless they are a home's only source of heat, according to the release. It applies to all outdoor burning, whether residential, agricultural or forest burning.
The burn ban will continue until at least 4 p.m. Friday, when it could be called off or extended.
