Editor’s Note: This month the Herald is featuring a series of stories on the Holiday Wish Lists of Mid-Columbia nonprofits and how you can help.
The Tri-City Union Gospel Mission provides a wide array of services to the neediest in the community.
And its holiday wish list is just as varied, from razors and travel-size deodorant to turkeys and toys.
The mission, based in Pasco, is one of several nonprofits the Herald is featuring in the coming weeks as Christmas approaches. The Holiday Wish List series is meant to highlight each organization's work and to let you know how you can pitch in to help.
Never miss a local story.
The Union Gospel Mission serves Tri-Citians of all ages and backgrounds.
"Everybody who comes through our doors is somebody's father, son, mother, something," said Andrew Porter, associate executive director.
The Union Gospel Mission is a place for them to call home for a while or otherwise find help as they're getting back on their feet, he said.
Some need a place to sleep, others need a hot meal or a box of food to help their family make it to the next paycheck.
In 2012, the mission provided about 41,000 nights of shelter to men, women and children, served about 79,000 meals, gave out about 41,200 pieces of clothing and handed out almost 14,000 household items, from dishes to lamps.
The organization has two emergency shelters on North Second Avenue -- one for men and one for women and children. Other services range from the meals, food boxes, clothing and hygiene items, to recovery help and transitional housing.
The nonprofit is in the midst of a building campaign for a new men's facility and community outreach center. It's about $2.5 million from its $8.9 million goal, Porter said.
The project will get a boost this month from Adams Tri-Cities Enterprises, the local McDonald's owner/operator, which is marking its 40th anniversary by donating 40 cents from each beverage sold through Dec. 24.
Porter said the hope is to break ground in the third quarter of next year. For more information about the campaign, go to www.tcugm.org.
The mission's holiday wish list includes: turkeys, chocolate bars, razors, travel-size deodorant and shaving cream for men, women's underwear, laundry detergent and children's toys.
The mission is at 112 N. Second Ave., Pasco. For more information, call 547-2112.
