Two local ceremonies are planned to observe the 17th annual Compassionate Friends Worldwide Candle Lighting event.
Beginning at 7 p.m. Dec. 8, people around the world will light candles for an hour to honor and commemorate the memories of deceased children.
Hundreds of formal candle lighting events are held around the world, and thousands more informal candle lightings are conducted in homes, according to a news release.

w 6:30 p.m. Dec. 8 at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 915 Bypass Highway, Richland. Bring a small photograph or memento of the child to place at the front table. Guests will be given candles.
The service will include songs, a message of consolation delivered by Chaplain Tim Ledbetter, a prayer of blessing, an opportunity to share remembrances or tributes of deceased children and a ceremonial extinguishing of the candles.

w 6:45 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Sandberg Event Center, 331 W. 41st Ave., West Richland, sponsored by the Tri-Cities Chapter of The Compassionate Friends. Bring a standing framed photo or a small remembrance item of the child to be placed beside their candle on a memorial table. The service will include music, poetry and a ceremonial lighting of the candles. Call Sandy Fishback at 539-7731 for more information.
Those who wish to participate but cannot attend a ceremony are encouraged to light a candle in their homes from 7 to 8 p.m.
