A Pasco college student was among 12 people arrested Wednesday at an immigration protest outside the home office of U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Spokane.
Stephanie Fuentes, 18, said she has feared having her parents taken away by immigration authorities while she was at school. She wants McMorris Rodgers, chair of the House Republican Conference, to support immigration reform and call on leadership in the House of Representatives to bring legislation to a vote.
"Also I do it for friends I went to school with who worked hard, said the Pledge of Allegiance, and graduated high school with good grades but now can't go to college or get a job because they don't have papers," the Eastern Washington University student said in a statement.
The 12 people who were arrested were expected to be released Wednesday, said Charlie McAteer, spokesman for One-America, a Seattle-based organization that wants citizenship for immigrants living in the country illegally.
The protest was attended by more than 100 local residents, McAteer said.
