Mail sent to the Franklin County Courthouse soon may need more specific information.
County commissioners discussed at their Wednesday meeting a plan to add additional box numbers to the mailing addresses of county departments.
The U.S. Postal Service doesn't take mail inside the secure area of the courthouse, county administrator Fred Bowen said. That means it now drops off all the mail outside the gates for county agencies located inside the building.
"Volunteers from each department will take it inside and sort the mail," Bowen told commissioners.
The county plans to install separate mailboxes for each department outside the courthouse gates, but commission Chairman Rick Miller said it likely will take a year to get them in place.
"It takes time for all the vendors to get used to it," he said. "In a year or so, we'll perfect it and get it right."
To make the make the sorting possible, the county has proposed a system of office numbers based on which floor and what building the office is located.
For example, the planning and building department is located on the first floor of the main courthouse building, so it would be A-101. The county prosecutor's office is on the third floor of the public safety building, so it would be numbered B-304.
Until the mailboxes are in place, Miller said he hopes to have the post office band together the mail to different departments when it's delivered to the courthouse. That would make it easier to distribute it between departments, he said.
