A new mixed-use development featuring restaurants, retail space and offices could open in Kennewick in about 12 months.
The Kennewick City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to accept a proposal by Dirk and DeRae Strickler of NAI Tri-Cities to purchase approximately 1.37 acres for $447,142.
The property is at the corner of Highway 395 and Hildebrand Road near the Southridge Sports & Events Complex in Kennewick.
NAI Tri-Cities plans to build a two-story, 14,000-square-foot development adjacent to a Rock Wood-Fired Pizza & Spirits restaurant being built by H&H Northwest Companies of Portland.
Jeff Kossow, Kennewick's director of planning and economic development, said NAI Tri-Cities also plans to build a 4,000-square-foot, standalone restaurant on the property.
A committee of council members and city staff reviewed five proposals for developing the property, Kossow said.
The city wants to be sure any development on the property complements other nearby structures, including Bob's Burgers & Brew, the sports and events complex, the 9/11 memorial and the pizza restaurant, Kossow said.
NAI Tri-Cities and H&H Northwest will work together to create a shared courtyard between the two properties.
In other business Tuesday, the council voted unanimously to accept the design of local artist David Mullins for a metal sculpture to be installed in a roundabout to be built at Grandridge Boulevard and Young Street.
The sculpture, entitled Triumph of Harmony Over Time, includes representations of the three rivers, the sun, music notes and three dancers. It will be built by a professional fabrication company in the Tri-Cities.
"The music notes are kinetic, they'll move in the wind," said Terry Walsh, employee and community relations director for the city.
Mullins' design was one of 12 considered by the Kennewick Arts Commission. The cost of the sculpture was included in the contract for the construction of the roundabout.
Kennewick now has 19 roundabouts, with three more in the planning phase.
Councilman Bob Olson was not able to attend Tuesday's meeting.
