Kadlec’s new freestanding emergency department in Kennewick was supposed to open at 7 a.m. Monday, but patients started showing up about a half hour early.
Since then, “it’s been a steady stream,” said Carla May, the emergency department’s manager. “We have not been empty since we opened.”
The new facility is at Highway 395 and West 19th Avenue, by Southgate Elementary School.
It’s open 24 hours a day. By 4 p.m. Monday, 15 to 20 patients had come through, May said.
The $17 million, 21,500-square-foot facility has 15 exam rooms, plus a multipurpose room with three more exam bays.
In the days leading up to the grand opening, May and her staff ran through simulations -- with staffers acting as mock patients -- to work out the kinks.May said the practice runs were invaluable.
“I couldn’t have asked for better opening day. It’s gone great,” she said.
