WALLA WALLA -- The Walla Walla Veterans Affairs Medical Center is inviting veterans and the community to a dual ceremony starting at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation will perform a traditional blessing of land for the new State Veterans Home, which is being built at the federal medical center's grounds.
The VA then will have a ribbon cutting for its new Residential Rehabilitation Unit. The 36-bed substance abuse treatment facility will replace an aging building.
Representatives from the VA will be there, as well as Walla Walla Mayor Jim Barrow and staff from the offices of Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Spokane.
The event at 77 Wainwright Drive also will include a barbecue.
