Guns have been stolen in vehicle prowls in Kennewick six times so far this year, prompting Kennewick police to remind people to keep their weapons and cars secured.
Citizens have the right to possess guns, Sgt. Ken Lattin said, but they also have the responsibility to keep guns out of the hands of criminals.
Last year, nine guns were swiped during seven vehicle break-ins, Lattin said.
"Criminals look for opportunities to steal guns from honest, law-abiding citizens," he said. "For the safety of our community and the safety of our law enforcement personnel, it is incumbent upon each and every gun owner to ensure that their weapons are secure at all times."
Authorities also urge people to remember, "When you leave it, lock it," which applies to cars, shops and homes.
