YAKIMA -- A Pasco man was sentenced to three months in jail for a crash on Interstate 82 near Grandview that injured a female passenger.
Jose Antonio Gomez, 24, may serve his time on home detention if eligible, under the terms of his plea in Yakima County Superior Court to a felony charge of vehicular assault.
State troopers said Gomez appeared to be intoxicated following a Jan. 6 crash near Milepost 72. A 21-year-old passenger suffered a severe head laceration and broken vertebrae.
According to the terms of Wednesday's deal, Gomez's guilty plea to vehicular assault was not for being intoxicated but a lesser form called "disregard for the safety of others."
Prosecutors also dropped a drug charge that stemmed from the discovery of suspicious powder-filled baggies in Gomez's wrecked Chevrolet Corvette.
Explained deputy prosecutor Sam Chen: "Crime lab couldn't tell what the substance was, strange as it sounds."
