HERMISTON -- The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has fined the Army $3,791 for failing to do all required monitoring of the sewage treatment systems at the Umatilla Chemical Depot.
The Army operates the depot near Hermiston, which is being shut down. The depot's incineration plant continues to be used during cleanup and demolition operations, but the sewage system was not part of that plant.
About half of the fine was for failure to monitor wastewater earlier this year for ammonia, nitrates and other nitrogen pollutants. The other half was for failing to conduct quarterly water monitoring this year of pollutants, including suspended solids and biochemical oxygen demand.
The state of Oregon learned of the violations through the Army's discharge monitoring reports. The Army has until Monday to appeal.
