The Richland School District will be reviewing policies with its bus drivers after a kindergartner was dropped off at the wrong location and with a stranger Wednesday.
Five-year-old Isabelle Hegel, who attends Marcus Whitman Elementary School, was left at an apartment complex a block from her family's north Richland apartment complex, said her mother Ashley Hegel. Hegel said she later was told the driver was new to the route and unfamiliar with the area.
The bus driver saw a man and asked if he recognized the kindergartner. The man mistakenly thought the girl was another from the neighborhood and didn't realize it until after Isabelle was off the bus and the bus had left. He left her with a manager of the apartment complex until he found the girl's father nearby waiting for her.
District spokesman Steve Aagaard said Hegel contacted several district officials about the incident. He said the bus driver did not follow protocol, which is to contact parents if a student's drop-off location isn't clear or the parents aren't there.
Hegel said she picked her daughter up from school Thursday and planned to do so until she makes something for her daughter to carry with a phone number on it in case of future issues.
