This is a good time of year to watch for open seats on tours of the Hanford nuclear reservation because there may be cancellations.
Registration for all of the tours this year opened in March, with all seats claimed within six hours. However, there tend to be cancellations for the late summer tours as people forget they registered or make other plans, said Department of Energy spokesman Rich Buel.
Remaining tours this summer are at 8 and 10 a.m. Aug. 28-30, Sept. 11-13 and Sept. 25-27. To check for openings as cancellations occur, go to www.hanford.gov and click under the "Tours" section on the right side of the page.
Participants must be at least 18 years old.
Never miss a local story.
The five-hour sitewide bus tours include a look inside B Reactor, plus stops at other facilities where environmental cleanup work is being done.
Separate tours limited to B Reactor also are offered. Information about those tours is available at the same website or by calling 376-1647.
